EU anti-terror workshop on jails and internet in Lebanon

De Kerchove, 'justice system can help prevent attacks'

(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, JANUARY 18 - A workshop was held on Thursday in the Lebanese capital on countering radicalization in jails and the spread of extremism online.

It was organized by the Lebanese government and the European Union.

Government and civil society representatives and Middle Eastern and European experts took part, as did EU counterterrorism coordinator Gilles de Kerchove.

In his speech, De Kerchove underscored the difficulties in identifying detainees who had been radicalized at an initial stage, a practice that had seemed easier until a few years ago. The EU coordinator also discussed the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration into society of the former prisoners. To this end, the EU delegation in Lebanon has recently launched a three-year program focusing on violent extremists in the country's jails, with special attention on young adults. Kerchove said that the initiative was based on the conviction that an effective justice system that fully respects human rights can do much to prevent terrorist attacks. (ANSAmed).
